Edmond Halley: The Man Behind Halley’s Comet
Edmond Halley was a 17th–18th century English astronomer and mathematician.
He studied a mysterious comet that reappeared every 76 years.
In 1705, he correctly predicted the comet’s return using Newton’s laws.
This was the first time a comet was shown to follow a predictable orbit.
The comet was later named “Halley’s Comet” in his honor.
Halley also mapped the southern stars during voyages to the South Atlantic.
He created one of the first global maps of Earth’s magnetic field.
Halley supported Newton, helping publish Principia Mathematica.
His work proved that comets were part of the solar system, not omens.
Halley’s legacy lives on every time the comet returns to Earth’s skies.
